³ Samuel told them, “If you^(A) are returning to the Lord^(B) with all your heart,^(C) get rid of the foreign gods^(D) and the Ashtoreths that are among you, set your hearts on the Lord, and worship only him.^(E) Then he will rescue you from the Philistines.”

⁹ But if you return to me and carefully observe my commands, even though your exiles were banished to the farthest horizon,^[a] I will gather them from there and bring them to the place where I chose to have my name dwell.”^(A)

²² Then you will defile your silver-plated idols and your gold-plated images. You will throw them away like menstrual cloths, and call them filth.

³⁰ “Therefore, house of Israel, I will judge each one of you according to his ways.”^(A) This is the declaration of the Lord God. “Repent and turn from all your rebellious acts, so they will not become a sinful stumbling block to you.
