⁵ The Lord came down in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed his name, “the Lord.” ⁶ The Lord passed in front of him and proclaimed:

The Lord—the Lord is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth,^{(A) 7} maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin.^(B) But he will not leave the guilty^(C) unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation.

³ Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has spoken:

And Aaron remained silent.

¹⁰ “You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept only good from God and not adversity?” Throughout all this Job did not sin in what he said.^[a]

⁸ Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord that you have spoken is good,” for he thought: There will be peace and security during my lifetime.^(A)
