Matthew 16:11-28
Legacy Standard Bible
11 How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But (A)beware of the [a]leaven of the (B)Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the (C)Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter Confesses Jesus Is the Christ
13 (D)Now when Jesus came into the district of (E)Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, saying, “Who do people say that (F)the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say (G)John the Baptist; and others, [b](H)Elijah; but still others, [c]Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15 He *said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, “You are [d](I)the Christ, (J)the Son of (K)the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, (L)Simon [e]Bar-Jonah, because (M)flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are [f](N)Peter, and upon this [g]rock I will build My church; and the gates of (O)Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you (P)the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and (Q)whatever you bind on earth [h]shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth [i]shall have been loosed in heaven.” 20 (R)Then He [j]warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the [k](S)Christ.
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
21 (T)From that time [l]Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and (U)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “[m]God forbid it, Lord! This shall never [n]happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, (V)Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on [o]God’s interests, but man’s.”
Take Up Your Cross
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and (W)take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For (X)whoever wishes to save his [p]life will lose it; but whoever loses his [q]life for My sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the (Y)Son of Man (Z)is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and (AA)will then [r]repay each one according to his [s]deeds.
28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the (AB)Son of Man (AC)coming in His kingdom.”
