²⁵ “Yes,” he said.

When he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first,^[a] “What do you think, Simon? Who do earthly kings collect tariffs or taxes from? From their sons or from strangers?”^[b](A)

² They began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, opposing payment of taxes^(A) to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is the Messiah, a King.”

⁶ And for this reason you pay taxes, since the authorities are God’s public servants, continually attending to these tasks.^{[a] 7} Pay your obligations^(A) to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes,^(B) tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect,^(C) and honor to those you owe honor.
