¹⁶ You will ^[a](A)know them by their fruits. ^[b]Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? ¹⁷ So ^(B)every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.

^43 (A)For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, ^[a]on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. ^44 (B)For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush.

^4 (A)Remain in Me, ^[a]and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit ^[b]of itself ^[c]but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me. ⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him ^[d](B)bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. ⁶ If anyone does not remain in Me, he is ^(C)thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. ⁷ If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ^(D)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
