⁸ When the crowds saw this, they were awestruck^[a][b] and gave glory^(A) to God who had given such authority to men.

²⁶ But if we say, ‘From men,’ we’re afraid of the crowd,^(A) because everyone thought John was a prophet.”^(B)

⁶ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people^(A) will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.”^(B)

¹⁹ Then the scribes and the chief priests^(A) looked for a way to get their hands on Him^(B) that very hour, because they knew He had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.^(C)

² The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death,^(A) because they were afraid of the people.^(B)

²⁶ Then the commander went with the temple police and brought them in without force, because they were afraid the people might stone them.^(A)
