Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 32[a]
By David; a well-written song.[b]
32 How blessed[c] is the one whose rebellious acts are forgiven,[d]
whose sin is pardoned.[e]
2 How blessed is the one[f] whose wrongdoing the Lord does not punish,[g]
in whose spirit there is no deceit.[h]
3 When I refused to confess my sin,[i]
my whole body wasted away,[j]
while I groaned in pain all day long.
4 For day and night you tormented me;[k]
you tried to destroy me[l] in the intense heat[m] of summer.[n] (Selah)
5 Then I confessed my sin;
I no longer covered up my wrongdoing.
I said, “I will confess[o] my rebellious acts to the Lord.”
And then you forgave my sins.[p] (Selah)
6 For this reason every one of your faithful followers[q] should pray to you
while there is a window of opportunity.[r]
Certainly[s] when the surging water[t] rises,
it will not reach them.[u]
7 You are my hiding place;
you protect me from distress.
You surround me with shouts of joy from those celebrating deliverance.[v] (Selah)
8 I will instruct and teach you[w] about how you should live.[x]
I will advise you as I look you in the eye.[y]
9 Do not be[z] like an unintelligent horse or mule,[aa]
which will not obey you
unless they are controlled by a bridle and bit.[ab]
10 An evil person suffers much pain,[ac]
but the Lord’s faithfulness overwhelms the one who trusts in him.[ad]
11 Rejoice in the Lord and be happy, you who are godly!
Shout for joy, all you who are morally upright![ae]
14 That day the Lord brought honor to Joshua before all Israel. They respected[a] him all his life,[b] just as they had respected[c] Moses.
15 The Lord told Joshua, 16 “Instruct the priests carrying the ark of the covenantal laws[d] to come up from the Jordan.” 17 So Joshua instructed the priests, “Come up from the Jordan!” 18 The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord came up from the middle of the Jordan, and as soon as they set foot on dry land,[e] the water of the Jordan flowed again and returned to flood stage.[f]
19 The people went up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month[g] and camped in Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. 20 Now Joshua set up in Gilgal the[h] twelve stones they had taken from the Jordan. 21 He told the Israelites, “When your children someday ask their fathers, ‘What do these stones represent?’[i] 22 explain to[j] your children, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan River[k] on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the water of the Jordan before you while you crossed over. It was just like when the Lord your God dried up the Red Sea before us while we crossed it.[l] 24 He has done this so[m] all the nations[n] of the earth might recognize the Lord’s power[o] and so you might always obey[p] the Lord your God.”
6 Therefore we are always full of courage, and we know that as long as we are alive here on earth[a] we are absent from the Lord— 7 for we live[b] by faith, not by sight. 8 Thus we are full of courage and would prefer to be away[c] from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So then whether we are alive[d] or away, we make it our ambition to please him.[e] 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,[f] so that each one may be paid back according to what he has done while in the body, whether good or evil.[g]
The Message of Reconciliation
11 Therefore, because we know the fear of the Lord,[h] we try to persuade[i] people,[j] but we are well known[k] to God, and I hope we are well known to your consciences too. 12 We are not trying to commend[l] ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to be proud of us,[m] so that you may be able to answer those who take pride[n] in outward appearance[o] and not in what is in the heart. 13 For if we are out of our minds, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ[p] controls us, since we have concluded this, that Christ[q] died for all; therefore all have died. 15 And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised.[r]
