Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
9 For you have taken refuge in the Lord,
my shelter, the Most High.
10 No harm will overtake[a] you;
no illness[b] will come near your home.[c]
11 For he will order his angels[d]
to protect you in all you do.[e]
12 They will lift you up in their hands,
so you will not slip and fall on a stone.[f]
13 You will subdue[g] a lion and a snake;[h]
you will trample underfoot a young lion and a serpent.
14 The Lord says,[i]
“Because he is devoted to me, I will deliver him;
I will protect him[j] because he is loyal to me.[k]
15 When he calls out to me, I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble;
I will rescue him and bring him honor.
16 I will satisfy him with long life,[l]
and will let him see my salvation.”
6 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh,[a] for compelled by my strong hand[b] he will release them, and by my strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”[c]
2 God spoke[d] to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord.[e] 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as[f] God Almighty,[g] but by my name ‘the Lord’[h] I was not known to them.[i] 4 I also established my covenant with them[j] to give them the land of Canaan, where they were living as resident foreigners.[k] 5 I[l] have also heard[m] the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving,[n] and I have remembered my covenant.[o] 6 Therefore, tell the Israelites, ‘I am the Lord. I will bring you out[p] from your enslavement to[q] the Egyptians, I will rescue you from the hard labor they impose,[r] and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 I will take you to myself for a people, and I will be your God.[s] Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from your enslavement to[t] the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you to the land I swore to give[u] to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob—and I will give it to you[v] as a possession. I am the Lord.’”
9 [w] Moses told this[x] to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him[y] because of their discouragement[z] and hard labor. 10 Then the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Go, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt that he must release[aa] the Israelites from his land.” 12 But Moses replied to[ab] the Lord, “If the Israelites did not listen to me, then[ac] how will Pharaoh listen to me, since[ad] I speak with difficulty?”[ae]
13 The Lord spoke[af] to Moses and Aaron and gave them a charge[ag] for the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.
35 This same[a] Moses they had rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and judge?’[b] God sent as both ruler and deliverer[c] through the hand of the angel[d] who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This man led them out, performing wonders and miraculous signs[e] in the land of Egypt,[f] at[g] the Red Sea, and in the wilderness[h] for forty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites,[i] ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’[j] 38 This is the man who was in the congregation[k] in the wilderness[l] with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors,[m] and he[n] received living oracles[o] to give to you.[p] 39 Our[q] ancestors[r] were unwilling to obey[s] him, but pushed him aside[t] and turned back to Egypt in their hearts, 40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go in front of us, for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt[u] —we do not know what has happened to him!’[v] 41 At[w] that time[x] they made an idol in the form of a calf,[y] brought[z] a sacrifice to the idol, and began rejoicing[aa] in the works of their hands.[ab] 42 But God turned away from them and gave them over[ac] to worship the host[ad] of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘It was not to me that you offered slain animals and sacrifices[ae] forty years in the wilderness, was it,[af] house of Israel?
