Deuteronomy 26:1-11

Presentation of the Firstfruits

26 When[a] you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you occupy it and live in it, you must take the first of all the ground’s produce you harvest from the land the Lord your God is giving you, place it in a basket, and go to the place where he[b] chooses to locate his name.[c] You must go to the priest in office at that time and say to him, “I declare today to the Lord your[d] God that I have come into the land that the Lord[e] promised[f] to our ancestors[g] to give us.” The priest will then take the basket from you[h] and set it before the altar of the Lord your God. Then you must affirm before the Lord your God, “A wandering[i] Aramean[j] was my ancestor,[k] and he went down to Egypt and lived there as a foreigner with a household few in number,[l] but there he became a great, powerful, and numerous people. But the Egyptians mistreated and oppressed us, forcing us to do burdensome labor. So we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and he[m] heard us and saw our humiliation, toil, and oppression. Therefore the Lord brought us out of Egypt with tremendous strength and power,[n] as well as with great awe-inspiring signs and wonders. Then he brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now, look! I have brought the first of the ground’s produce that you, Lord, have given me.” Then you must set it down before the Lord your God and worship before him.[o] 11 You will celebrate all the good things that the Lord your God has given you and your family,[p] along with the Levites and the resident foreigners among you.

Psalm 91:1-2

Psalm 91[a]

91 As for you, the one who lives[b] in the shelter of the Most High,[c]
and resides in the protective shadow[d] of the Sovereign One[e]
I say this about the Lord, my shelter and my stronghold,
my God in whom I trust—

Psalm 91:9-16

For you have taken refuge in the Lord,
my shelter, the Most High.
10 No harm will overtake[a] you;
no illness[b] will come near your home.[c]
11 For he will order his angels[d]
to protect you in all you do.[e]
12 They will lift you up in their hands,
so you will not slip and fall on a stone.[f]
13 You will subdue[g] a lion and a snake;[h]
you will trample underfoot a young lion and a serpent.
14 The Lord says,[i]
“Because he is devoted to me, I will deliver him;
I will protect him[j] because he is loyal to me.[k]
15 When he calls out to me, I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble;
I will rescue him and bring him honor.
16 I will satisfy him with long life,[l]
and will let him see my salvation.”

Romans 10:8-13

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart[a] (that is, the word of faith that we preach), because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord[b] and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and thus has righteousness[c] and with the mouth one confesses and thus has salvation.[d] 11 For the scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”[e] 12 For there is no distinction between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, who richly blesses all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.[f]

Luke 4:1-13

The Temptation of Jesus

Then[a] Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River[b] and was led by the Spirit[c] in[d] the wilderness,[e] where for forty days he endured temptations[f] from the devil. He[g] ate nothing[h] during those days, and when they were completed,[i] he was famished. The devil said to him, “If[j] you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”[k] Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man[l] does not live by bread alone.’”[m]

Then[n] the devil[o] led him up[p] to a high place[q] and showed him in a flash all the kingdoms of the world. And he[r] said to him, “To you[s] I will grant this whole realm[t]—and the glory that goes along with it,[u] for it has been relinquished[v] to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish. So then, if[w] you will worship[x] me, all this will be[y] yours.” Jesus[z] answered him,[aa] “It is written, ‘You are to worship[ab] the Lord[ac] your God and serve only him.’”[ad]

Then[ae] the devil[af] brought him to Jerusalem, had him stand[ag] on the highest point of the temple,[ah] and said to him, “If[ai] you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’[aj] 11 and ‘with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”[ak] 12 Jesus[al] answered him,[am] “It is said, ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’”[an] 13 So[ao] when the devil[ap] had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time.[aq]
